Wallpaper in a New-Construction Home: Fresh Drywall, Settling and Timing
You can wallpaper a new-construction home, but fresh drywall must be properly primed first, builder textures usually need a skim coat, and it can pay to wait for the house to settle before papering walls prone to cracks. A wallcovering primer on new drywall also protects the drywall face when the paper is removed years later.
In short
- Never hang paper on bare, unprimed drywall.
- Builder-grade flat paint and texture usually need prep before paper.
- New homes can show nail pops and small cracks in the first year.
- Check your builder warranty before changing walls the builder may need to repair.
Fresh drywall needs primer
Bare drywall and joint compound absorb paste unevenly, and paper bonded straight to drywall can tear the face when removed. A wallcovering primer seals the surface, helps the paper grip and makes future removal much easier.
Builder finishes
Many new homes in Grayson, Loganville and across Gwinnett County come with light orange-peel texture and flat builder paint. Texture shows through most papers, so a skim coat is often needed. Flat builder paint can be chalky; we test adhesion and prime before hanging.
Settling and nail pops
As framing lumber dries and a house settles, nail pops and hairline cracks often appear, especially in the first year. If they appear under new wallpaper, the repair means cutting into the paper. For high-risk walls such as tall foyers and stairwells, some homeowners wait until after the builder's first-year touch-ups.
Builder warranty
If your builder warranty covers drywall repairs, ask how wallpaper affects it before you paper. Keep a spare roll in case a section ever needs replacing.

FAQ
Common questions
How long should I wait before wallpapering a new home?
There is no fixed rule. Many homeowners start with low-risk rooms right away and wait for first-year touch-ups before papering tall walls and stairwells.
Can you wallpaper over builder paint?
Usually yes, after cleaning, testing adhesion and applying a wallcovering primer.
Does new drywall need a skim coat?
Only if it is textured or has visible joints. Smooth, well-finished drywall needs primer only.
