Planning guide
How Long Does Wallpaper Installation Take? A Room-by-Room Timeline
Most single rooms take one to two days to wallpaper professionally. An accent wall or a powder room is usually done in a day. Removing old paper, skim coating textured walls, large pattern repeats and stairwells add time, and joint compound dries more slowly in humid Georgia summers.
In short
- Accent wall or powder room: usually one day.
- Bedroom or dining room with light prep: one to two days.
- Removal of old paper or a full skim coat: add about a day.
- Two-story foyers, stairwells and ceilings take longer.
Typical timelines
These are typical for one experienced installer working on prepared, dry walls. Your schedule comes with your estimate.
| Project | Typical time | What can stretch it |
|---|---|---|
| Accent wall | Half a day to one day | Mural layout, large repeat |
| Powder room | About one day | Many cuts around fixtures |
| Bedroom or dining room | One to two days | Skim coat, wainscoting, windows |
| Living room | Two to three days | Height, number of openings |
| Stairwell or two-story foyer | Two days or more | Scaffolding, long drops |
| Ceiling | Adds time to any room | Working overhead |
What adds days
Removing old wallpaper
Removal from a typical bedroom usually takes about a day, plus repairs. See wallpaper removal cost.
Skim coating
Textured walls need joint compound, drying, sanding and primer before paper. Drying is slower when the air is humid, so summer jobs in Georgia can need extra time between coats.
Specialty materials
Grasscloth, silk and murals are hung more slowly and need more planning than standard paper.
Getting the paper
The most common delay is not on site: it is waiting for rolls. Book installation once your paper has arrived and you have checked that all rolls share the same batch number.
How to prepare for install day
- Clear small items and art from the walls.
- Move furniture to the middle of the room, or ask if moving is included.
- Keep the rolls unopened in the room so they acclimate.
- Plan for the room to be out of use for the day.

FAQ
Common questions
Can I use the room the same day?
Usually yes, once the installer has cleaned up. Avoid leaning furniture against fresh paper for a day.
How long before wallpaper is fully dry?
Paste typically needs a day or two to cure fully, longer in humid weather. Keep the room ventilated and at a normal temperature.
Do you work weekends?
Ask your installer. Many offer flexible scheduling for occupied homes and businesses.
