DIY or Hire a Pro? When Wallpaper Installation Is Worth Paying For

Peel-and-stick on a small, smooth wall and simple non-woven paper in a square room are realistic DIY projects. Hire a professional for expensive or specialty papers, murals, grasscloth, stairwells, ceilings, textured walls and anything over a staircase, because mistakes there waste costly paper and are hard to undo. Labor is often a smaller share of the budget than the paper itself.

In short

  • Good DIY: peel-and-stick, small accent walls, non-woven paper on smooth walls.
  • Hire a pro: grasscloth, murals, metallics, stairwells, ceilings, textured walls.
  • Professional labor nationally runs about $1 to $7 per square foot.
  • The paper is often the bigger cost; a ruined strip can cost more than the labor.

What professionals do that DIY often skips

  • Check that every roll has the same batch number before cutting.
  • Repair and skim the wall, then use a wallcovering primer.
  • Plan the layout so the pattern is centered and the last seam is hidden.
  • Use the right adhesive for the paper (see adhesives).
  • Double-cut seams and wrap outlet covers cleanly.

The cost math

Angi lists professional labor at about $1 to $4 per square foot, and HomeGuide at $3 to $7. For designer papers that cost more than the labor, a single mis-cut strip can wipe out the savings of doing it yourself. See installation cost.

FAQ

Common questions

Is hanging wallpaper hard?

Simple papers on smooth walls are manageable. Pattern matching, specialty materials and prep are where most DIY projects struggle.

Can a pro fix my DIY wallpaper?

Often, if the issue is seams or bubbles. Badly prepared walls usually mean removing the paper and starting again.

Will a pro hang paper I already bought?

Yes. Most clients buy their own paper; we check the quantity first.
